Honourable Tajudeen Abbas has secured the position of Speaker in the 10th House of Representatives. ๐๐ฃ๏ธ The lawmaker representing Zaria Federal Constituency has made a remarkable achievement by garnering 353 votes out of 359, leaving Ahmed Wase and Sani Jaji far behind with only three votes each.
The APC has chosen Abbas and Hon Benjamin Kalu as the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the 10th House, respectively. However, this decision did not sit well with the other contenders known as the G-7, who have vowed to continue the battle.
One by one, the members of the G-7 dropped their aspirations to become the Speaker of the 10th Assembly, influenced by pressure, advice, or personal conviction.
On Sunday, Betara and Gagdi withdrew from the race after meeting with President Bola Tinubu and Vice-President Kashim Shettima.
Wase and Jaji, on the other hand, refused to give up. They continued to pursue the speakership, making a total of three nominees.
The process began before 10 am, with the Deputy Clerk of the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlami, and the Clerk of the House presiding over the session.
Ogunlami conducted a roll call for all 359 Members-elect before calling for the nomination of candidates for the position of Speaker in the 10th House.
The House decided to adopt an open ballot system as outlined in its amended House rules, stating that when there are more than two nominations, each Member-elect must openly declare their choice for the position of Speaker.
Former Majority Leader of the House, Alhassan Ado-Doguwa, nominated Abbas, while a lawmaker from Kwara State, Tijjani Kayode Ismail, nominated Ahmed Wase, the immediate past Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives.
Nnolim Nnaji seconded Abbas’s nomination.
Doguwa explained that Abbas possesses parliamentary experience, competence, and the ability to collaborate effectively with other branches of government to preside over the 10th Assembly.
Ahmed Yusuf Ibrahim from Katsina State nominated Jaji from Zamfara State.
Jaji gladly accepted the nomination, expressing his readiness to defend democracy.
During the voting process, the Members-elect cheered for Aliyu Betara, a former aspirant for Speaker, as he cast his vote for Abbas.
As Betara was called upon to declare his choice among the three contenders, many lawmakers cheered and applauded him.
