ππ¦ Please Avoid ‘Pomo’: Nigeria Raises Alert Over Possible Disease Outbreak π«
The Nigerian government has sounded an alarm about a potential disease that can affect both humans and animalsπ³π¬π₯π.
A report released by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD) indicates that this disease, known as anthrax, has started appearing in the West African region; specifically, it is most prevalent in Northern Ghana, near Burkina Faso and Togoππ¦ π.
The report, signed by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Ernest Umakhihe, urges Nigerians to avoid consuming ‘pomo’ (cow skin), smoked meat, and bushmeat, in order to prevent the disease from spreading furtherππ₯©π«.
In a phone interview conducted by PREMIUM TIMES with the Director of Information for the ministry, Joel Oruche, on Monday, he confirmed the authenticity of the report and advised Nigerians to heed this warningππ°π.
The report warns that consumption of ‘pomo’ could pose serious risks until the situation is brought under controlπ³ππ.
About Anthrax
According to the report, anthrax spores are found in soil and affect domestic and wild animals alikeπ§ͺπ±π.
It states that humans can contract anthrax spores if they come into contact with infected animals or contaminated animal productsπππ¦ .
However, the disease does not spread from person to person, so one cannot contract it from someone infected with itπ·π€π«.
The early signs of anthrax are flu-like symptoms such as coughing, fever, and body aches. If not diagnosed and treated promptly, it can cause pneumonia, severe lung problems, difficulty breathing, shock, and potentially even deathπ€π¬β³.
Treatment
It is stated that anthrax can be treated with antibiotics and supportive therapyππποΈ.
“The disease primarily affects animals, but due to the proximity of humans to animals, animals that have not been vaccinated against anthrax can transmit it to humans if they inhale anthrax spores or consume contaminated or infected animal products, such as hides and skin, meat or milk,” the ministry explainedπ«ππ₯.
Vaccination
The ministry states that annual vaccinations with anthrax spore vaccines are available at the National Veterinary Research Institute Vom, Plateau State, and that this is the cheapest and easiest method to prevent and control the disease in animalsππ₯π΅.
However, animals that are already infected cannot receive the vaccine, but those at risk can be vaccinatedππβ .
The report also says: “In this current situation, increasing animal vaccinations in Border States such as Sokoto, Kebbi, Niger, Kwara, Oyo, Ogun, and Lagos states will be beneficial because of their proximity to Burkina Faso, Togo, and Ghana. Other states in Nigeria should also participate in the exerciseπΊοΈππ.
The ministry urges the public to remain calm and vigilant, stating that the government has revived the committee in charge of controlling Anthrax within the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Developmentπ₯ππ.
It is said that relevant organizations and individuals who can help control the outbreak have been contacted, and this is in addition to the awareness being raised among state directors of veterinary services across Nigeriaππ£οΈπ³π¬.
